Wall Street Warns of Market Risks from Proposed Trump-Era Foreign Investor Taxes
Wall Street analysts are sounding alarms over potential new taxes targeting foreign investors under Section 899 of U.S. tax code. The provision, designed to counter punitive foreign tariffs, could inadvertently destabilize markets during a fragile economic recovery.
PGIM Fixed Income’s Greg Peters calls the measure "a market-spooking event" that risks damaging foreign investor confidence. Morgan Stanley analysts note the proposal may weaken the dollar and deter international capital flows—particularly concerning given America’s mounting debt financing needs.
JPMorgan highlights the provision’s sweeping implications for multinational corporations. A senior Wall Street banker privately warned this could become "one of the more worrisome ideas to emerge from Washington this year," potentially chilling foreign direct investment in U.S. assets.
